Franklin Roy Bruno was born on the 16th of November 1961. Frank signed professional terms in 1980 and then went on to win 40 out of 45 bouts. Bruno won his first 21 fights by knockout and quickly rose up the boxing ladder. He was unfortunately stopped in his tracks in March 1984 by James Bone crusher Smith. Frank was stopped in the tenth and final round, however he was up on all three judges scorecards, if he could have seen out the final round he would undoubtedly of been victorious. The highlight of Franks career would be on September 2nd 1995 when he finally became WBC Heavyweight champion of the world by defeating Oliver McCall on points over twelve rounds. Frank`s last career fight was against Iron Mike Tyson where Bruno was stopped in round three and decided enough was enough, however Frank is still an alltime British legend.
Ray Charles Leonard was born on the 17th of May 1956. Ray was named after the singer Ray Charles and was nicknamed Sugar by his first amateur trainer in his hometown of Maryland. In 1973 a boxing promoter had offered Sugar Ray a large amount of money to fight in his first pro fight, but Leonard refused as he had his heart set on the 1976 Olympics. Ray made it to that Olympics and made it all the way to the final against Andres Aldama. Aldama was a clear favourite but Sugar Ray shocked everyone with a superb fight, in the last round Aldama was given a standing eight count twice. Leonard went on to win the gold medal with an impressive 5-0 win, his 145th win as an amateur boxer. After Ray turned pro he beat some of the best boxers there has ever been including Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler, which is where Leonard won the World Middleweight title. Ray also went on to win titles in welterweight, junior middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. Which makes Sugar Ray Leonard the first ever boxer to win world boxing titles in 5 different divisions.
Giacobe (Jake) LaMotta was born on 10th July 1921 in the Bronx, New York. His nicknames include "The Bronx Bull" and "Raging Bull". Jake began fighting at an early age and turned professional at the age of 19 in 1941. Jake fought in 136 professional bouts, winning a record of 83 times. 30 of his wins were by knockouts. Jake became world champion in 1949. He was famously portrayed by Robert de Niro in the film of his life - Raging Bull. Richard John Hatton who is better known as Ricky “the Hitman” Hatton was born on the 6th October 1978 in Manchester England. Ricky boasts a fantastic record of 47 fights with 45 wins 32 of those by way of KO. The Hitman’s famous fight was against kostya Tszyu where he outclassed the Australian and won by technical knockout. Hatton is one all the alltime British boxing legends whose character is just as powerful as he’s punch.
Joseph William Calzaghe CBE was born on the 23rd of March 1972 in London and is an undefeated Welsh professional boxer. "The Italian Dragon" held the WBO super middleweight title for over a decade, making him the longest-reigning world champion in recent history. The 2007 BBC Sports Personality of the year won all his 46 professional fight, 32 by KO. "The Pride of Wales" is now fighting at light heavyweight and is based at the Newbridge Boxing Club.
Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. is better known to most people as Muhammad Ali and was born in Kentucky U.S on the 17th January 1942. Ali is probably the most famous boxer of all time, he shot to fame winning gold in the 1960 Olympic Games and was a three time World Heavyweight Champion. Ali was involved in three of the best fights ever witnessed in Boxing, The Thrilla in Manila, The Rumble in the Jungle and The Fight of the Century. James Frederick Degale was born in Hammersmith on the 3rd of February 1986. James fought at the commonwealth games for Britain, unfortunately he lost to Jarrod Fletcher to earn a respectful Bronze medal. Degale shot to fame in the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he won the Gold medal by beating Emilio Correa in an aggressive final where Correa got deducted 2 points in the first round for biting Degale`s shoulder. On the 2nd December 2008 along with Frankie Gavin and Billy Joe Saunders, James signed a professional contract with Frank Warren thought to be worth around £1.5million. In the 2009 new years honours James DeGale very proudly received an M.B.E from the Queen herself at the young age of just 22.
Roberto Duran was born on the 16th of June 1951 in Chorrillo Panama and is a retired professional boxer widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. Duran nicknamed "Hands of Stone" fought in five different decades and held world titles in four different weights. The boxer, who was trained by American boxing trainer legend Ray Arcel, in 2002 was chosen by Ring Magazine to be the 5th greatest fighter of the last 80 years. The same year he retired aged 50 with an impressive 103 wins in 119 fights, 70 by KO.
Sir Henry Cooper was born in South East London on the 3rd May 1934. Henry is the only British Boxer who has won 3 Lonsdale belts outright, he was also European and Commonwealth champion in 1970. Sir Henry fought Muhammad Ali twice and after their epic encounter at Wembley in 1963 Ali was quoted in saying that Henry "had hit so hard that his ancestors in Africa felt it". Sir Henry is still a British legend to this day.
Charlie Magri was born on July 20th 1956 in Tunisia however he grew up in Stepney East London, Charlie won 30 out of 35 professional fights and held the British, European and WBC world flyweight titles. Since Magri retired after his fight with Duke McKenzie in 1986 he went on to manage super featherweight boxer Dean Pithie . Charlie Magri is still regarded as one of the best two handed punchers there has ever been.
